Our Role in Oporajita

To create an enabling environment for the women RMG workers, Save the Children is working as a consortium partner of the Oporajita project. Save the children is dedicated to Improve child protection, nutrition, child development and STEM opportunities for the children of women garment workers and improve access to parenting support for women workers and their families which are essential to create an enabling environment for women RMG workers to continue their work and professional growth. To achieve the goal, Save the Children is playing a vital role in ensuring availability of child protection services, parenting support, enhancing diet and nutrition for the children, Early childhood development, and Improving STEM opportunities for young children in 6 communities at Savar Upazila of Dhaka and Gazipur district.

Who are we

Save the Children International (SCI) is a child rights organization with a mandate rooted in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. SCI works in 120 countries worldwide to change children's lives for the better. As one of the largest child-rights organization in Bangladesh, SCI directly reaches over 16 million people annually through its significant technical expertise in Health, Education, Protection, Livelihood and Humanitarian response. Save the Children is operating in Bangladesh since the 1970’s.- SCI has the expertise and long experience to work in both development and humanitarian settings. It also has long experience working with corporates and RMG sectors, including addressing the rights of workers and children. At present, SCI is working across the Bangladesh with the government, civil society organizations, businesses, and others to ensure the rights of children to survive, to learn, and to be protected.

Why are we a part of Oporajita

Save the Children is working globally to establish the rights of children with a special focus on the most vulnerable and marginal groups. In Bangladesh, children of RMG workers are one of the vulnerable groups as they are facing challenges to enjoy rights, including care, protection, education, and development. Save the Children has identified the children of RMG workers as a target group for its intervention. On the other hand, Oporajita project has emphasized creating an enabling environment for the women RMG workers at the family level, where the importance of ensuring care, protection and development of the children is crucial. Partnership engagement of Save the Children and Oporajita project is mutually inclusive.

Activities and Impact

Our Activities

  • Make available Daycare services to 2-5 years children of RMG workers for ensuring their protection, nutrition, and early childhood development.
  • Conduct STEM sessions to 6-9 grade children at school and community level for inspiring them to take STEM subjects for their future education.
  • Ensure protection and Phycological support services to children through case management process.
  • Deliver Life Skills sessions to children to develop their soft skills.
  • Develop awareness among the parents on projection, nutrition, balanced-diet, building brain and age-appropriate through parenting support.
  • Develop Teachers' capacity on STEM so that they can continue STEM sessions at schools in their own way.
  • Establish and facilitate child groups to develop their leadership and raising voice to resolve child rights related issues.
  • Mobilize community to ensure their participation in project activities.
  • Stakeholders'(LGI, garments owner schools authority, UH&FWC etc) engagement to improve access and ensure children's rights, protection, and education.
  • Advocacy at the national level for quality implementation of Daycare act.

The Targets of the Project

Total children: 6,000

  1. Provide Daycare support: 360 children.
  2. Formation and facilitate child Group: 300 children.
  3. Provide STEM sessions at school and community level: 1200 children.
  4. Child Space for awareness and recreation: 3540 children
  5. Case Management: 600 children.

Total adult 10,700

  1. Provide parenting support: 4920 adults.
  2. Courtyard session: 5520 adults.
  3. Stake holders: 260 adults
