Our role in OPORAJITA

Shimmy’s role in Oporajita is to improve employability, productivity, and livelihood opportunities for women garment workers through industry-responsive and technical training on multi-skilled machine operation through our innovative digital training tool. Shimmy will deliver a well-designed, responsive, supportive system oriented for women RMG workers that helps them meet the requirements of jobs needed in the market from 2023 onwards.

Who are we

Shimmy Technologies is an industrial ed-tech company with a mission to upskill and reskill manufacturing workers to stay relevant and gain equal access to decent work on the path to Industry 4.0. Our award-winning app-based trainings use games to build digital literacy and machine skills.

Shimmy works with factories and brands, with their traction mainly in Asia, where they’ve trained over 4,000 workers to date.

Why are we a part of Oporajita

Shimmy is a company focused on workers within the fashion supply chain. We are motivated to participate in this collective impact initiative for several reasons:

  • We are driven by a commitment to social responsibility and ethical business practices, recognizing the importance of improving working conditions and opportunities for women in the garment industry.
  • By being part of Oporajita, we can contribute to developing a more sustainable and equitable industry using technology.
  • By collaborating and finding synergies with other Oporajita members, we can amplify and build sustainable interventions to increase women’s opportunities and improve their livelihoods in Bangladesh.

Activities and Impact

Our Activities

Funded Planning Phase

  • Develop a project plan with ensured alignment with other CI partners.
  • Identify a clear set of skill targets and requirements of the RMG industry within the current landscape based on the findings of The Apparel Automation Pulse, Shimmy’s research project.
  • Develop a modern learning journey for women workers complete with associated hands-on training. The intervention will focus on delivering an optimal user experience designed with accessibility and other human-centered design principles.
  • Analyze results from research and disseminate them with CI Partners to ensure alignment through virtual channels.

Design and Prototyping Phase

  • Launch test training with Shimmy’s training team to evaluate, iterate and refine our training.
  • Create roll-out plans, build a multi-point training workflow, and research the design of a Learner Management System.

Implementation & Activation Phase

  • Implement tablet-based and hands-on technical training for 3,120 women and 20 male co-workers.
  • Train ten trainers at TTCs, factories, and associations in coordination with CI partners.

Amplification & Inspiration Phase

  • Communicate the stories, best practices, and proof points so other actors are convinced and compelled to take action.

    • 2600 will be currently employed at factories.
    • 520 workers will come from Technical Training Centers (TTCs). TTC trainees could be fresh, out-of-work, or unemployed women who wish to learn sewing operations and increase their employability.
  2. Number of male production co-workers of women RMG workers: 20 Male personnel from Production who will be trained on Shimmy Upskill at factories
  3. Number of trainers trained at Technical Training Centers: 10. These individuals will be trained as master trainers to carry out this training at local TTCs and trade association-sponsored training centers.
